The day he married Tenten was the best day of his life.
Neji and Tenten were married on a Sunday in March, the sun bright in the sky. They were only 23, but ninjas didn't tend to live into there thirties so no one said anything. Neji actually smiled, a real true smile, when Tenten glided down the aisle, flushed with happiness. They kissed at the alter, danced at the reception, and were waved off to their honeymoon by happy friends and family.
It seemed to be perfect, and for that one day it was. The following day however, proved to be the worst day of Neji's life.
They knew it was coming, and knew that it would have to be done before the pair set off to the Land of Waves for their two week getaway, but Neji had never imagined it would be so horrible. It was the day Tenten received the curse mark.
Dressed in all white the pair sat stoically together as the Elders prepared for the marking ceremony. Tenten gave Neji's hand a little squeeze as if to tell him it was alright, as if he was the one who needed comfort. This caused him to be angry, hating himself for what he was putting her through.
It did not take very long for the green mark to be burned into the bun haired girl's forehead. She remained perfectly calm, not smiling, but no other emotions present either.
Neji, however, was not as strong. The look of pain of his face as he looked at his beautiful wife's marred forehead was heart wrenching.
When they were excused Tenten quickly pulled Neji into the compound's gardens. She kissed him softly on the lips.
"I'm okay, really." She said, going up on her tip toes so that she could look straight into his eyes.
"It's all my fault, if you had married another man…" He trailed off, but she knew he meant it, he thought she could do better.
"Neji, you and I both know I could never care for another the way that I care for you. I don't care about how my forehead looks, or about having to be part of the branch family." Tenten said, still keeping eye contact.
"You shouldn't have to. I didn't want this for you, I- I am to selfish." He looked at the ground like a guilty child.
"I am selfish as well Neji, I knew this would upset, but I still did it, I still married you." She began unwrapping the clothe covering his mark. Hers was fresher looking but they were otherwise identical.
"We're married, we share struggles and happiness. One day soon the houses will be abolished and we can both be freed. Until then this is a price I am willing to pay." Her words did little to sooth the disgruntled man.
"I will never forgive myself." He said, voice full of finality. Tenten just held him in her arms, knowing he truly meant it.
Yea this is very sad, but I've been having a bad month so give me a break
